Lapensee makes it four straight wins at Falher Ladies Bonspiel

A team from Falher and two from Peace River were top winners at the annual Ladies Bonspiel, hosted by the Falher Centennial Curling Club Jan. 25 to 27.
For the fourth successive year, Falher skip Rita Lapensee won the ‘B’ Event, edging the McLennan rink skipped by Joce McArthur 9-7.
“It was an intense game all the way,” said Lapensee.
“They were an awesome team to play.”
Helping her to victory were teammates Rita Loiseau, Diana Turcotte, and Diane Lefebvre.
Completing the McLennan team were Rita L’Heureux, Sue Delauriere, and Carol Stenhouse.
Linda Labbe of Peace River captured the ‘A’ Event, beating Colette Trudeau of Girouxville 10-6, while Irene Bekevich of Peace River claimed the ‘C’ Event with a 10-5 decision over Tamie Aubin of Falher.
Curling with Trudeau were Carol St. Andre, Sue Aubin and Leona Turcotte.
Filling the Aubin rink were Sue Chalifoux, Muriel Marceau, and Sharon Bedard.
Just eight rinks competed in the bonspiel, with three from Falher, two each from Girouxville and Peace River, and one from McLennan.
“We usually have more teams,” said Lapensee, a director of the Falher Curling Club and one of the bonspiel organizers.
“We lost a few teams to other commitments.”
Shortly after the club started in the late 1960s, the event was drawing around 32 teams when curling was about the only activity in town, noted icemaker Ron Gardecki.
“Normally for the ladies bonspiel, we get 12 to 14 teams,” he added. “But the enthusiasm is still there and the sport is fun and enjoyable.”
Falher Curling Club hosts three more bonspiels this season, with the first annual farmers’ tournament Feb. 8 to 10, with the men’s March 1 to 3, and the final bonspiel March 22 to 24.
